After Berlin, Weimar and Essen, Chemnitz is at the centre of the international cultural scene this year as European Capital of Culture . The Saxon metropolis and its surrounding area attract visitors from all over the world with innovative event formats. But there is also plenty going on in other German cities and regions in 2025.
For example, art lovers in Berlin will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of Museum Island with exhibitions, concerts and film events. Anyone interested in architecture and design should include Dessau on their itinerary from September this year. To mark its 100th birthday, the unique school of architecture and design is organising 16 months of special events spanning from the historic to the new European Bauhaus.
In terms of music, Germany will be centred around Johann Sebastian Bach. To mark the 275th anniversary of the baroque composer's death, the many Bach cities and Bach festivals in Germany have set themselves particularly ambitious goals and are honouring the genius with top-class concerts and modern interpretations.
Romantics should not miss the 50th anniversary of the German Fairy Tale Route. Around 60 towns and regions along the famous holiday route tell the story of the origins of the now world-famous fairy tales and legends of the Brothers Grimm.
