Art Museum in the Monastery of our Lady Magdeburg
The Art Museum in the Monastery of our Lady is located at the heart of Magdeburg, just a stone's throw from the Elbe River. The building complex is considered to be one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in the whole of Germany.
This museum is a beautiful blend of contemporary art and medieval architecture. The collection on display across five floors within a Romanesque monastery showcases key movements in the international art world since 1960 and historical sculptures from Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern age, with a particular focus on the 20th century. There is no doubt that this is the most important exhibition of contemporary art in Saxony-Anhalt.
Temporary special exhibitions also present contemporary art from around the world, focusing on specific themes or offering insight into the work of innovative artists of our time. The vast sculpture park surrounding the building is home to plenty more works of art, making it the perfect place to go for a leisurely stroll. The museum also includes a library that dates all the way back to 1638 and holds a collection of at least 22,500 books. Opening times: Tuesday to Friday: 10 am–5 pm, Saturday and Sunday: 10 am–6 pm
