Battle of Varus – Kalkriese Museum and Park Osnabrück
The Battle of Varus in the Osnabrücker Land region is highly regarded the world over as an event with plenty of research potential. The museum and extensive grounds delve into the history behind the battle and even cater to junior visitors.
Excavations began in Kalkriese 30 years ago. On this spot of land in the Osnabrücker Land region, a united Teutonic army annihilated three Roman legions at least 2,000 years ago. The exhibition thoroughly summarises the findings of 20 years of research and offers insights into the lives of the Romans and Teutons.
Back in the 1980s, a retired officer came across some incredible artefacts on this site, including projectiles used by Roman legionaries. The professional digs then began in 1989. And now the museum offers a fascinating look at the most recent findings. Plus, visitors can read the display boards along the Germanic Path or take a stroll along the Roman Path. Exceptional special exhibitions, a jam-packed events calendar and exciting adventures are also on offer. Check out the high ropes course, handcart hire and play area. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am–5 pm
