Museum for Franconia
The Museum for Franconia can be found in the stunning setting of the Marienberg Citadel in Würzburg. Regarded as one of Bavaria's leading museums, it is home to unique works by Franconian artists.
The artistic significance of works by artists who lived and worked in Franconia has resulted in the museum building up a global reputation as a highly regarded institution over the years. The 40 exhibition rooms feature paintings, sculptures and crafts originating in Würzburg and Main-Franconia in the time between the early periods and the 19th century. The world's largest collection of work by Tilman Riemenschneider can be found in the museum. And the collection of historical wine vessels and the traditional costumes in the folklore section are also fascinating to look at.
Tilman Riemenschneider was one of the most prolific sculptors and woodcarvers of the Late-Gothic era in Germany and he delivered his work beyond the city borders to Franconia. Riemenschneider's most famous masterpieces include the carved altarpieces in Münnerstadt, Rothenburg and Creglingen. He also created stone sculptures for St. Mary's Chapel in Würzburg and the tomb of Prince-Bishop Rudolf von Scherenberg. Opening times: 1 April to 31 October: 10 am–5 pm, 1 November to 31 March: 10 am–4 pm
