Climate-friendly cities
Many of Germany's cities combine sustainability with urban quality of life. Holidaymakers can look forward to green oases in the heart of the city, a laid-back atmosphere and sustainable experiences. Environmentally friendly mobility is innovatively promoted and implemented.
All of the cities presented here have been recognised as sustainable travel destinations by TourCert thanks to their extensive measures.
On two wheels through the residence of law
As the seat of the Federal Court of Justice and the Federal Constitutional Court, Karlsruhe is known as the "residence of law". This modern student city is also a relaxed cycling area. The 48-kilometre NaturRADtour circuit leads through the city and on to eight protected areas and three natural landscapes – without any hills. If that's not enough, cycle up to the Turmberg and enjoy the breathtaking views. Afterwards, you can relax and roll down into the city, for instance to the organic restaurant erasmus, which has been awarded a MICHELIN Green Star for its regional, seasonal fine dining.
Through the Hanseatic city of Lübeck as captain
In the middle of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, visitors can become captains themselves: at the helm of an e-boat , they glide almost silently past the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town with its Holsten Gate, salt warehouses, imposing cathedral towers and picturesque shores of the Old Town island. In the evening, the hotel "Die Reederin" offers stylish and sustainable accommodation. The building looks back on 150 years of shipping history and has been furnished with antique and upcycled furniture in a climate-conscious fashion. The hotel team keeps the environment a top priority when buying ingredients for their regional dishes and uses cargo bikes.
Visiting nature park restaurants in the Upper Black Forest
In the towns of the Upper Black Forest Nature Park, holidaymakers can enjoy protected nature in more ways than one: a feast for the eyes when hiking, walking or cycling – and for the taste buds when visiting its nature park restaurants. These award-winning establishments collect forest herbs and fresh vegetables from local farmers themselves and transform them into tasty regional and sustainable dishes. When you stay in any one of the 27 accommodations participating in the innovative CO2 project, you'll be helping the environment in your sleep.
Through the Harz Mountains with electricity and biogas
Electromobility is a top priority in the Harz town of Wernigerode. This is obvious not only in several charging stations in the city centre, but also in the striking red electric castle trainthat conveniently takes visitors up to the magnificent Wernigerode Castle with a minimal carbon footprint. Comfortable biomethane buses are available for other routes, taking hikers to the district of Schierke below the Brocken peak and deeper into the Harz National Park, for example. By the way: overnight guests can take advantage of these offers with the Harz holiday ticket HATIX at no extra cost.
Winter sports and summer joy in Winterberg
Winterberg, the roof of the Sauerland, attracts visitors all year round with its healthy, stimulating climate. The town is also known for its winter sports and a wide range of hiking opportunities in summer, and has created an eight-kilometre-long "Klimi on Tour" healing climate adventure trail especially for families.
