The Werra Castle Trail in Hesse - roam like a knight
Travel back in time on the Werra Castle Trail in Hesse. Experience the Middle Ages in the castles and palaces and hike along the inner German border of the Cold War era between Thuringia and Hesse.
The 128 kilometre Werra Castle Trail is a quality hiking path in central Germany. In 2016, the path near Kassel and Göttingen was voted the second most beautiful hiking trail in Germany by the readers of Wandermagazin. Our hike starts in Hann. Münden, where the Werra and Fulda rivers converge and flow into the Weser. On our stroll through Meißner-Kaufungen Forest Nature Park, we encounter countless castles, ruins and a moated castle. We taste the fruits of the 150,000 cherry trees in the small town of Witzenhausen. We stay overnight in wooden treetop cabins in the Robin's Nest Treehouse Hotels. As we are not travelling with armour as the knights once did, we seem to float like a feather above the meadows of the Werra Castle Trail. Our trail ends in Tannenburg, where we have a sumptuous banquet and live and roam like knights!
TIP: Berlepsch Castle
Manuel Andrack, editor, presenter, author and hiking blogger:
"19 generations of the Counts of Berlepsch have lived in this castle. Visitors can feast on medieval delicacies in the castle's restaurant. The castle tours are fun for all ages."
