German Youth Hostel Association e.V.
A recipe for success with tradition - "Experience community" in our youth hostels!
From List to Oberstdorf, from Aachen to Görlitz - a dense network of more than 400 youth hostels covers the country. The German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) offers overnight stays with added value: affordable getaways with great entertainment value and a high learning factor.
A recipe for success: the non-profit association has more than 2.3 million members.
Peaceful coexistence and the encounter of people from all over the world has been the motivation behind the youth hostel idea for more than 100 years. Inclusion, openness to the world, tolerance and sustainability are just some of the values that the German Youth Hostel Association stands for as a non-profit organisation. Values that enrich life.
Wherever "Experience community" is written on the label, "Experience community" is also in it! Youth hostels have always inspired people with fascinating experiences and a large portion of fun, with opportunities for further education, for discovering and learning together.
Whether it's a group trip, a school trip, a family holiday or a seminar with added value - the youth hostels tailor the right offer to their guests. Depending on the facilities, offers and programmes, individual youth hostels are particularly suitable for these special target groups and are certified accordingly.
Thanks to the label "Especially suitable for...", guests can quickly get an overview and find suitable hostels. This is a guaranteed hit when looking for suitable accommodation.
Should your accommodation not only be suitable, but also unusual? The German Youth Hostel Association can also fulfil this wish: More than 30 youth hostels are housed in castles and palaces. But if you like, you can also spend the night in a tree tent or a barrel. Let us inspire you!
Immerse yourself in exciting worlds and other eras - this is what the programmes that focus on culture invite you to do. This includes visiting theatres and museums as well as learning about multimedia techniques. Culture wants to be experienced, and where better than in an experience-oriented and contemporary environment where, on top of that, an intensive exchange can take place? The youth hostels and their cooperation partners make it possible!
Experiential education and environmental education are key programme focuses. The programmes of the Umwelt|Jugendherbergen have become a recognised quality concept in out-of-school environmental education.
Sport and activity are good for you, but the combination works even better when combined with the right nutrition and "mental food".
When everything is experienced together as a team and in a strong community, a solid basis for a healthy and responsible life can develop - and of course there is no shortage of fun!
Inclusion is part of everyday life in the youth hostels. Many of the guesthouses already offer a barrier-free or barrier-reduced travel experience - from accommodation to leisure programmes.

Keeping the future of future generations firmly in mind: Environmental protection and sustainability are two important issues that the German Youth Hostel Association is committed to.
Since its foundation, the DJH has contributed to tolerance, environmental awareness and intercultural understanding with its youth hostels and through special education and encounter programmes. These goals are enshrined in the statutes, as is the support for a healthy life and the connection to nature.
Sustainable action has to be learned. As the largest provider of school trips and camps, the youth hostels play a leading role here. On the one hand, the DJH has high standards for itself in new buildings, modernisations and sustainable energy and waste concepts.
On the other hand, a sustainable way of thinking also determines everyday life in the youth hostels - from more conscious nutrition with healthy delicacies from the region to climate-neutral overnight stays.
Since the introduction of the first sustainability strategy more than 30 years ago, the DJH has been steadily on its way to becoming an increasingly sustainable company.
