COME ENJOY SAXONY

MALIN & ROB

Day 1

Malin and Rob jump on a train in Malmö Sweden to Copenhagen where they change to a train taking them straight to Hamburg station where they visit a food court with plenty of vegan options, allowing them to bring vegan sushi for their last train dropping them off in Dresden. They check in at their hotel with high sustainability rating located in Neustadt on the north side of the Elbe River, ready to start exploring the city.

After a walk crossing the bridge the couple fuel off on energy with vegan brunch in Altstadt before heading to the Zwinger Palatial Complex, which is one of the most essential baroque buildings in Germany. Additionally to enjoy the breathtaking architecture and scenery they decide to visit one of the many museums located here, the Old Masters Picture Gallery where they are captivated by world-famous masterpieces such as Raphael's Sistine Madonna, Rembrandt's Ganymede, and Bernardo Bellotto's views of Dresden.

After a dose of culture, Malin and Rob make their way to a farmer’s market to get some local souvenirs to bring home and fresh strawberries to enjoy in the baroque park Großer Garten. Here they discover that Dresden let the grass grow into meadows across the city to support biodiversity and this park is certainly no exception. Filled with renewed enthusiasm, the couple takes a leisurely stroll back to Altstadt, eager to visit the Frauenkirche and ascend to the dome, where they are rewarded with a magnificent view of Dresden from above.

Day 2

Malin and Rob are starting their day strolling the neighborhood of Neustadt, browsing in second hand shops, package free stores and even a vegan butcher. They continue to Kunsthofpassage, which translates into Art Courtyard Passage, to experience the five courtyards designed according to different themes such as Mythical creatures, Metamorphosis and the Elements. The latter is for example being expressed through various downpipes that are working as musical instruments when it’s raining. This piece of art of a neighborhood is also housing numerous restaurants, boutiques, galleries and cafés.

After an early dinner and some time back at the hotel to freshen up, Malin and Rob make it to Semperoper, the Opera House of Dresden where they enjoy a triple bill Ballet. Malin used to be a dancer herself so it is safe to say that she is extra excited to spend a night at the opera!

Day 3

The couple arrives at a dock by the Elbe River, where a steamboat awaits to transport them to the enchanting Pillnitz Palace. Along the scenic journey, they are treated to breathtaking views of majestic buildings, castles, and the surrounding nature. The approximately one-hour trip provides the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy a refreshing beverage. Rob decides to savor a locally produced Riesling, embracing the spirit of the region.

Upon arrival, they are greeted by the architectural gem that blends Baroque and Chinese styles, Pillnitz Palace. Surrounded by lush gardens, it houses captivating museums that showcase its rich history and cultural heritage. Malin and Rob are focusing on an exhibition called Plant Fever - Towards a phyto-centred design which embraces the need to reevaluate the human-plant relationship and delves into themes like climate justice and humanity's ecological impact. They end their visit with a walk in the garden and a stop by the Palm House.

Day 4

The couple eagerly embarks on further exploration of Saxony. They hop on an S-train that takes them to Kurort Rathen, where they board a ferry for a quick two-minute ride across the river, arriving at the enchanting Saxon Switzerland National Park. With their sights fixed on the Bastei Bridge, they set off on a hike that includes climbing stairs and hills, all while being treated to breathtaking views along the way. They are captivated by the majestic sandstone mountains, the deep green valleys, and the breathtaking views of the Elbe River from above. Reaching their destination, they purchase a 2,5 € ticket to enter Felsenburg Neurathen which is a medieval fortress in ruin that you can explore with the help of metal ramps and stairs connecting the different areas – of course with the perfect view of the iconic Bastei Bridge itself.

Day 5

Today is all about exploring Schmilka! By getting the S-train to Hirschmühle station and then a quick ferry across the river, Malin and Rob arrive at the picturesque village known for its charming half-timbered houses and scenic surroundings. This is a place that is best enjoyed by simply immersing in the tranquil atmosphere of the village by strolling through its cobblestone streets – an experience that the couple wholeheartedly embrace. Besides enjoying the local cuisine they are also joining a beer brewery tour and the one and only bakery of the village, providing everyone with freshly baked bread made of weat graded by the water powered mill.

Day 6 & 7

It is time to catch the S-train again, this time with Meissen as the destination where they are being greeted by the breathtaking Albrechtsburg castle which is one of the oldest ones in all of Germany. The couple start their exploration by wandering the romantic historic center of the city before climbing the stairs all the way up to the castle which initially, it was intended to be a residence for the rulers of Saxony and later on ended up being a porcelain manufacturing facility where they worked on perfecting their craft inspired by China. Today, Albrechtsburg Castle is home to the Meissen Porcelain Museum.

Saxony is known for its winemaking heritage and stands out with its unique division of vineyards into small plots, which are diligently cultivated by over 3,000 small wine-growers. It goes without saying that the couple couldn't leave the area before at least visiting one of the vineyards. They used public transportation and within 25 minutes they reached their destination, ready for a private tour to learn all about the craft and have an educational yet lovely tasting.
